Death of elephant rescued from Karanjia Division.
On 06.012025, a male rescued elephant , approximately 5–6 years old, was brought from Karanjia Forest Division to Nandankanan Zoo for treatment.
The elephant had fallen into a morum quarry, sustaining spinal cord injuries that left it unable to bear weight on its hind limbs and caused paralysis in its hindquarters.
Upon arrival at Nandankanan, the zoo’s veterinarians, along with experts from the Centre for Wildlife Health (CWH), conducted an examination, including blood tests and X-rays. The diagnosis revealed a lumbar vertebral disc dislocation or compression, leading to hindquarter paralysis. Based on CWH’s recommendations, the elephant was placed in a sling with its feet touching the ground, and gentle hot fomentation was applied to the lumbo-sacral region.
The treatment plan also included fluid therapy, antibiotics, neurotonics, laxatives, and diuretics.
Although the elephant consumed grasses, tree leaves, and banana plants, it was unable to pass stool independently, necessitating manual removal of fecal boluses at regular intervals.
When no significant improvement was observed by January 16, 2025, a customized trevis structure was introduced to support the elephant’s hindquarters. However, the animal showed discomfort while in the trevis.
It was subsequently removed from the structure and placed on soft bedding for its comfort.
Health Committee on Nandankanan also examined the case on 6.1.2025 & 16.1.2025.
Despite the dedicated efforts of the veterinary team and experts, the elephant’s condition did not improve, and it died on the morning of January 22, 2025.
